EU Support to the MENA Road Safety Program
12-27-2011

As part of the overall EuroMed regional project on Road, Rail, and Urban Transport programme, our new EU funded project aims to contribute to the reduction of road crash death and injury in targeted countries and pilot communities. The programme countries include Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestinian Authority, Syria and Tunisia. The programme may also have interventions in Turkey, a EuroMed partner country.

Over the next three years, we will help the countries to put in place a regional approach that results in sustainable tri-sector partnership road safety activity being developed in the region. We launched the implementation phase in October 2011 with the view to achieve the following objectives:

• Stronger road safety planning and management in the pilot communities (or pilot countries)
• Capacity building for key staff in the region
• Coordinated multi-sector and multi-disciplinary cooperation on road safety and sustainable mobility in the communities
• Implementation of projects that are evidence-based and results focused
• Development of a transnational regional network on road safety with shared vision for road safety
• Production of a road safety support tools for the region

The programme will target both technical staff working within road safety authorities at the national and regional levels, and reach out to road users (passengers and drivers), vulnerable road users (children, pedestrians, bicyclists), decision makers of public authorities and politicians, vehicle fleets of companies and organizations, and the general public.
